EHS Compliance Calibration Records: What an Auditor Actually Checks

An EHS audit doesn't just check whether your instruments are calibrated — it checks whether you can prove it, on demand, for the specific device that produced the specific reading in question. A safety manager who says "we calibrate everything annually" without a document trail is in the same position as one who never calibrated at all, because an unverifiable claim doesn't satisfy an auditor or an OSHA inspector.

What does an EHS auditor actually pull first?

An EHS auditor or OSHA inspector reviewing occupational health instruments typically asks for three things in this order: the calibration certificate for the specific serial-numbered unit in use, the date of the last calibration compared against the manufacturer's or regulatory interval, and a record linking that instrument to the test results it produced. OSHA's own calibration language is narrower than most safety managers expect. For hearing conservation, 1910.95 Appendix E requires audiometer calibration checks — daily functional (biological) checks, and periodic acoustic and exhaustive calibration on defined intervals — but the standard doesn't itself mandate a specific paper format, just that the checks happen and problems get corrected.
