How certification works
The course and exam are online. The proficiency mocks that make the certification valid are proctored in real time — never a self-graded checkbox.

Pass the online exam
A server-graded final exam confirms you know the regulation and the testing sequence before you touch a subject. Device operation is confirmed later, on your instrument, during the monitored mocks.
Remote-proctored proficiency mocks
Run your seven mock tests — three screening and four confirmation — on one Proficiency Record, observed live by a CMI-certified instructor per §40.213.
CMI issues your certificate
Your Proficiency Record is submitted to CMI, who issues the DOT BAT certificate of record. Your Foster completion record is kept on file.

Before you enroll
Can I complete the course before I know which device I will use?
Yes. You can complete the role-based BAT coursework and written exam before choosing a device. That gives you a course-completion record, not authorization to perform DOT BAT tests. Your BAT qualification is finalized only after device-specific instruction and seven consecutive error-free mocks observed in real time on a device you will actually use.
What if my employer uses a device made by someone other than CMI?
Foster supports the CMI occupational-health device line. We do not currently train on or attest proficiency for non-CMI devices, and we will not claim that CMI-device training automatically qualifies you on another manufacturer’s equipment. Send us the exact manufacturer and model before scheduling the practicum. If we cannot support it, we will say so plainly and direct you to a qualified provider for that device.
